High Level Dialogue on Health in the Post 2015 Development Agenda concludes.

High Level Dialogue on Health in the Post 2015 Development Agenda concludes.

The consultation which was co-convened by the Governments of Botswana and Sweden with WHO and UNICEF, brought together 50 high level participants including Ministers of Health, members of the high-level Panel of Eminent Persons, Leaders of International health institutions, representatives of civil society and the private sector, academia, public health experts and youth. The purpose of the meeting was to discuss the place of health in the post 2015 development agenda.

The meeting agreed on three broad conclusions;

  1. Health must remain central to the post 2015 development agenda. Health is an integral part of human wellbeing. Health is at the centre of sustainable development. Health is a beneficiary of development, a contributor to development and a key indicator of what people-centred, rights based, inclusive and equitable development seeks to achieve.
  2. The health MDGs galvanised widespread political and public attention to the importance of improving health, and increased resources for health. The key lesson learnt is that the simplicity of the goals helped to ensure public support.
  3. Post 2015 goals must recognise the contribution of health to broader development and wellbeing, and include targets to accelerate progress on the health-related MDGs, address emerging and neglected health priorities including non-communicable diseases and sexual and reproductive health rights, focus on health systems through universal health coverage and access, and consider the impact of other sectors on health.

These conclusions will be submitted to the High Level Panel of Eminent Persons on Post-2015 Development Planning
